Alkaline Direct Alcohol Fuel Cells
Alkaline anion exhnage membrane based direct alcohol fuel cells will offer the advantages of todays DMFC like high energy density and high resilience agianst start.stop cycling but can avoid the use of platinum based catalyst and may be operated with more accetepted fuels eg. ethylene glycol or ethanol. Fraunhofer ICT looks for partners for the further development.
 
HTPEMFC based direct alcohol fuel cells
HTPEMFc based direct alcohol fuel cells offer the advantage of an energy dense easy to store liquid fuel and a potentially faster start-up time as systems using reformer. They could be used for applications were along with electrical back-up poer thermal backup is required. Fraunhofer ICT and its French and German partners look for partners for the further development.
 
Measurement of transient and mass transport processes in fuel cells
In line mass spectrometry and differentiel electrochemical mass spectrometry allow for the monitoring of gases leaving a fuel cell even during transient proceeses.
Thus the technologies can be used to montor catlayst support corrosion during transient states such as air-air-starts as well as the gas exchange in load changing situation.
Fraunhofer ICT offers measurement and development services.
 
Fuel cells as Range-Extenders or APU
Battery electric vehicles offer inexpensive short range transportation both as passenger cars or light commercial vehicles. However, the operating range is easily reduced by e.g. cold weather and recharging takes very long time. Integration with fuel cell power sources can mitigate these draw backs. Fraunhofer ICT is developing such solutions in different projects and we are looking for partners.

The Applied Electrochemistry Department performs applied research in the areas of fuel cells, batteries, flow batteries and sensor and analytical systems.
Topics in fuel cell research comprise the development of electroctalysts for low temperature fuel cells, membrane electrode assemblies and fuel cell systems, in particular for APU and range-extender applications.
